Tips For Beginner Cattle Showmen
Showing a calf that weighs nearly ten times as much as you is frightening. Let me tell you some tips for beginner cattle showmen.
Spend Time With Your Animal
Spending time with your animal is crucial in cattle showing. Allow that heifer/steer to learn who you are and get used to you. Even if you go to a show and your calf gets scared, they will know that you are a safe space for them. Also, the more familiar with you your calf is, the better they will behave and walk for you.
Work With Your Animal
Hard work pays off. Do not be that person to not work your cattle at all, especially if you are younger. Take some time out of your day, grab a halter, and walk your calf.
Try to make a schedule throughout the week of when you can walk and wash your calf. This way you are better organized.
Practice Showmanship
Showmanship is very important in the show ring. Especially when you are a beginner showman, make sure to take any chance you have to practice showmanship. Work on your movements with your show stick, and setting up your calf.
One trick I will always remember is walking my calf into the correct profile stance. This allows you to not have to mess with your calf’s leg set-up as much, which will result in a happier, content calf.
Don’t be Mad if You Don’t Win
So many cattle showmen get mad when they don’t win. Don’t let this be you. As I always say “You have to learn how to lose, before you can teach yourself how to win.” When doing this, every buckle and banner you win will mean so much more to you.
Go into the show ring knowing you are gaining experience and having fun. Whether you get last, first, or anything in between, don’t beat yourself up on your performance.
Just Have Fun!
Showing for the first time is nerve-wracking. But when you are nervous, your calf will be nervous. Don’t sit there and think about every possible negative effect that can happen.
Go into the show ring and just have fun. Make memories and friends of a life-time and enjoy yourself!
